The Museum of Ancient Messene is situated on the western outskirts of the village Mavromati, just 12 kilometers east of Kalamata. This is a small two-storey building with three exhibition halls and gallery, which also includes specific conservation areas. The building was built on land donated to the Archaeological Society Forum by D. Latzounis, a local resident. The report presents the findings of excavations made in Ancient Messene, from 1895 until today. Sculptures, inscriptions, decorated ceramics and coins create a complete picture of life in Ancient Messene. Some architectural and inscribed pedestals are being kept in the atrium and in the museum sheds.
The museum follows the course of the excavations through time and gives visitors the opportunity to discover both the long history of the region and the important role held by the Ancient Messene in ancient world.
